Unity 7 možda dobije opciju prebacivanja launchera na donji dio ekrana u Ubuntuu 16.04 LTS.

Ozbiljno? ovakve stvari su sada vijesti u linux svijetu?

The Ubuntu developers are finally working on a new feature called Aethercast for Ubuntu phones, which is a way to connect to the Miracast protocol.

One of the issues with the Ubuntu convergence is that it’s only available for the Nexus 4 devices, which can output video via an MHL connection. Other Ubuntu phones don’t allow this, which is annoying since the Nexus device is pretty old and scarce.

The simplest way of solving this issue is with a software solution, in this case by implementing support for the Miracast service. This is basically Wi-Fi Display and allows for the connection of a device to a monitor that has Wi-Fi networking capabilities. It’s described best described as "HDMI over Wi-Fi."

Aethercast for Ubuntu phones

A new entry has been spotted on Launchpad, thanks to Carla Sella, one of the Ubuntu insiders. It’s called Aethercast, and it’s just that, a software solution that should allow users to connect to the display that support the Miracast protocol.

Miracast is already pretty widespread, even if it’s not present in most of the monitors and TV, but, at least, it’s something more than just a cable for a very old phone. This is likely just the beginning, and it’s likely that Aethercast will support other protocols in the future.
Novi Canonicalov projekt imena Aethercast bi trebao omogućiti Ubuntu mobitelima koji nemaju hardversku podršku za vanjske ekrane da koriste Miracast protokol za spajanje na vanjski ekran koji ima Miracast podršku.

It Doesn’t Look Like Ubuntu Reached Its Goal Of 200 Million Users This Year”, says Michael Larabel of Phoronix, in a post that it seems he’s been itching to post for months.

Why the negativity?!? Are you sure? Did you count all of them?

No one has. And no one can count all of the Ubuntu users in the world!
Canonical, unlike Apple, Microsoft, Red Hat, or Google, does not require each user to register their installation of Ubuntu.

Of course, you can buy laptops preloaded with Ubuntu from Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Asus. And there are millions of them out there. And you can buy servers powered by Ubuntu from IBM, Dell, HP, Cisco, Lenovo, Quanta, and compatible with the OpenCompute Project.

In 2011, hardware sales might have been how Mark Shuttleworth hoped to reach 200M Ubuntu users by 2015.

But in reality, hundreds of millions of PCs, servers, devices, virtual machines, and containers have booted Ubuntu to date!
Let’s look at some facts…

Docker users have launched Ubuntu images over 35.5 million times.
HashiCorp’s Vagrant images of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit have been downloaded 10 million times.
At least 20 million unique instances of Ubuntu have launched in public clouds, private clouds, and bare metal in 2015 itself.
That’s Ubuntu in clouds like AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Compute Engine, Rackspace, Oracle Cloud, VMware, and others.
And that’s Ubuntu in private clouds like OpenStack.
Including some of the world’s largest private clouds, like Deutsche Telekom.
And Ubuntu at scale on bare metal with MAAS, often managed with Chef.
In fact, over 2 million new Ubuntu cloud instances launched in November 2015.
That’s 67,000 new Ubuntu cloud instances launched per day.
That’s 2,800 new Ubuntu cloud instances launched every hour.
That’s 46 new Ubuntu cloud instances launched every minute.
That’s nearly one new Ubuntu cloud instance launched every single second of every single day in November 2015.
And then there are Ubuntu phones from Meizu.
And more Ubuntu phones from BQ.
Of course, anyone can install Ubuntu on their Google Nexus tablet or phone.
Oh, and the Tesla entertainment system? All electric Ubuntu.
Google’s self-driving cars? They’re self-driven by Ubuntu.
George Hotz’s home-made self-driving car? It’s a homebrewed Ubuntu autopilot.
Snappy Ubuntu downloads and updates for Raspberry Pi’s and Beagle Bone Blacks — the response has been tremendous. Download numbers are astounding.
Drones, robots, network switches, smart devices, the Internet of Things. More Snappy Ubuntu.

How about Walmart? Everyday low prices. Everyday Ubuntu. Lots and lots of Ubuntu.
Are you orchestrating containers with Kubernetes or Apache Mesos? There’s plenty of Ubuntu in there.
Kicking PaaS with Cloud Foundry? App instances are Ubuntu LXC containers. Pivotal has lots of serious users.

And Heroku? You bet your PaaS those hosted application containers are Ubuntu. Plenty of serious users here too.
Tianhe-2, the world’s largest super computer. Merely 80,000 Xeons, 1.4 TB of memory, 12.4 PB of disk, all number crunching on Ubuntu.
Ever watch a movie on Netflix? You were served by Ubuntu.
Ever hitch a ride with Uber or Lyft? Your mobile app is talking to Ubuntu servers on the backend.
Did you enjoy watching The Hobbit? Hunger Games? Avengers? Avatar? All rendered on Ubuntu at WETA Digital. Among many others.
Do you use Instagram? Say cheese! Ubuntu, entirely in frame, in perfect focus.
Doing a deal on Wall Street? Ubuntu is serious business for Bloomberg.
Paypal, Dropbox, Snapchat, Pinterest, Reddit. Yep. More Ubuntu.
Wikipedia and Wikimedia, among the busiest sites on the Internet with 8 – 18 billion page views per month, are hosted on Ubuntu.
Osvrt na tvrdnju da će Ubuntu 2015 g imati 200 milijuna korisnika, sada vjerovatno i ima ako se računaju cloud i server verzije, desktopu će trebati još vremena za to :hihi

AT&T chose Canonical and Ubuntu to power its network and cloud, making this one of the most important collaborations for the creators of the Linux distribution.

The fact that AT&T chose Ubuntu is not all that surprising because Ubuntu has been making a killing in the cloud and it’s becoming the biggest platform out there, especially on OpenStack.

This has to be one of the biggest contracts for Canonical because they will provide support for Ubuntu for all of AT&T’s cloud, network and enterprise applications. I don’t have to remind you just how big AT&T really is. It’s also likely that other companies will choose to make the same choice since Ubuntu is becoming almost synonymous with the cloud.

It will take a long time

Since AT&T is a really big company, it will probably take some time until this transition is ready, so we’ll probably be hearing more about them and their collaboration.

“We’re reinventing how we scale by becoming simpler and modular, similar to how applications have evolved in cloud data centers. Open source and OpenStack innovations represent a unique opportunity to meet these requirements and Canonical’s cloud, and open source expertise make them a good choice for AT&T,” said Toby Ford, assistant vice president of Cloud Technology, Strategy and Planning at AT&T.

Ubuntu is by far the most popular Linux distribution for OpenStack and 80% of the large-scale OpenStack deployments are using this OS. Ubuntu is also a large player on the Amazon and Microsoft’s Azure. In fact, Microsoft even provides some limited Linux support for Ubuntu on Azure.

Canonical seems to be doing pretty much everything with Ubuntu for the cloud, for servers, for IoT devices, for desktops, and for mobile devices. The unification of most of these platforms are helping them advance, and we can only hope that all of this success will keep them grounded so they don’t forget the regular users.
AT&T je odabrao Canonical i Ubuntu za pogon svoje mreže i clouda :bravo

It has been a while since we last heard something from the development team of the File Roller archive manager, which is used by default in the GNOME desktop environment and any GNU/Linux operating system that uses the GNOME Stack.

File Roller 3.20 entered development for the upcoming GNOME 3.20 desktop environment just a while ago, and its development team managed to release the first milestone a couple of days ago. As usual, we have managed to get our hands on the internal changelog for File Roller 3.19.1 to share with our readers some details about the newly implemented features.

Therefore, for File Roller 3.20, the development team added support for .click package, which are used by Canonical in the Ubuntu Touch operating system, implemented support for the Nautilus (Files) file manager to select the extracted file, revamped the "Update Files" dialog, added support for displaying the extraction results in a message dialog, and removed the "Quit" button from the confirmation dialog.
Gnome File Roller će dobiti u verziji 3.20 podršku za Ubuntuove click pakete kao i neke druge novitete.
