Hyperscale, scale out and cloud computing are the hot topics in the server space today. Driven by increasing Internet traffic, massive amounts of data and widespread adoption of Linux-based open source workloads, companies ranging from Paypal and Bloomberg to Facebook are taking a fresh look at their approach to data centre infrastructure. The key elements of this disruption: innovation, automation, lower TCO, greater density, optimised power/performance ratios and even new architectures like ARM’s 64-bit ARMv8 .

In response, as part of its HP ProLiant Moonshot portfolio , HP is today launching two new ARM-powered server cartridges: the TI KeyStone II -powered m800 and the Applied Micro X-Gene -powered m400 – the latter representing the first enterprise-class 64-bit ARM server in the world. On each cartridge is a high-density, ARM-based server-grade system-on-a-chip (SoC) in a form-factor which can be rapidly deployed to deliver the value that Moonshot offers to customers. And powering each of these cartridges is the latest Ubuntu Server release, 14.04 LTS , which comes preinstalled and ready to run every class of scale-out workload, including Web 2.0, Big Data, storage, NFV and more.

Managing a chassis with tens to hundreds of nodes of multiple architectures in a cost-effective way really benefits from a completely new approach to provisioning and management. And this is exactly what Canonical and HP have partnered to deliver on the new ARM-based cartridges: out of the box the cartridges are manageable with Juju service orchestration and MAAS (Metal-as-a-Service) automated provisioning . These tools make it simple to deploy, manage and grow complex workloads like LAMP, OpenStack and Hadoop — in fact, it’s possible to get full deployments running in minutes . Ubuntu is the leading OS for cloud, scale-out and ARM-based hyperscale computing. It is the only operating system that boasts full support for every Moonshot server cartridge, covering hardware based on both x86 and ARM chipsets.

According to HP’s press release , “Canonical offers Ubuntu, and orchestration tools Juju and Metal-as-a-Service (MAAS) software pre-installed on HP ProLiant Moonshot servers to enable customers to deploy complex workloads quickly.”

Big Data, scale and cloud are the big topics of technology today. Canonical with Ubuntu continues to drive innovation through commitment to openness and building a collaborative ecosystem. Earlier this month, as part of its POWER portfolio, IBM announced new IBM Power S824L servers that are built on IBM’s POWER8 processor, the world’s first processor optimised for the most demanding Big Data workloads. Powering each of these servers is the latest Ubuntu Server OS 14.04 , which is the only operating system ready to run every class of Linux-only POWER8 scale-out server. Also, IBM announced, the IBM Data Engine for NoSQL, bringing together innovation from OpenPOWER members IBM, Redis Labs, Altera and Canonical. This solution enables a significantly lower cost basis for deploying NoSQL data stores. The solution combines Redis Labs software, Canonical’s Ubuntu operating system, Altera’s FPGAs and IBM’s unique CAPI-enabled Power Systems S822L with IBM’s FlashSystem 840.

Thanks to recent efforts at Netflix and Canonical, Ubuntu now supports watching Netflix with Chrome version 37. Chrome is available to all Ubuntu users with up-to-date installations of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS and later.

Netflix subscribers who already use Ubuntu can now watch simply by installing the Chrome browser.

With Ubuntu 14.10 "Utopic Unicorn" due out later this month, Mark Shuttleworth has just revealed the Ubuntu 15.04 codename...

Mark posted a new blog post a few minutes ago entitled V is for Vivid. In the post he explains the focus of Ubuntu 15.04, "This verbose tract is a venial vanity, a chance to vector verbal vibes, a map of verdant hills to be climbed in months ahead. Amongst those peaks I expect we’ll find new ways to bring secure, free and fabulous opportunities for both developers and users. This is a time when every electronic thing can be an Internet thing, and that’s a chance for us to bring our platform, with its security and its long term support, to a vast and important field. In a world where almost any device can be smart, and also subverted, our shared efforts to make trusted and trustworthy systems might find fertile ground. So our goal this next cycle is to show the way past a simple Internet of things, to a world of Internet things-you-can-trust."

He ends with naming the Ubuntu 15.04 release the Vivid Vervet, continuing in his tradition of progressing through the alphabet and using an adjective followed by an animal name. Here's a picture of a vervet, which is a type of monkey:
