Odavno ne koristim čisti Mint, ali znam da uz LMDE dođe velika nadogradnja približno svakih šest mjeseci. Tada skine oko 750-850 Mb. U međuvremenu se pojave manje nadogradnje, iako sam baš sad imao jednu veću: 70 Mb za noviju verziju Firefoxa i mislim za Thunderbird. To je valjda bila iznimka, jer su unutar šestomjesečnih ciklusa nadogradnje uz LMDE zaista kozmetičke, gotovo minimalne. Slično bih mogao reći i za Debian Stable... svaka dva-tri mjeseca doda malo više, kako stigne poboljšana verzija (7.1, 7.2 itd, trenutno smo na 7.6), a u međuvremenu minimalno, uglavnom vezano uz sigurnosni aspekt.

Uz Debian Testing pak nadogradnje stižu valjda svaki dan, no ja nadograđujem samo dvaput tjedno. Tako se obično skupi po nekoliko desetina Mb, a bude i više kad nadograđuje LO.

With the first Ubuntu Phones still on course to ship later this year, its developers are now in the final furlong of preparing for a ‘Release To Manufacturing’ milestone.

As part of the ongoing work, a number of previously missing, outstanding and broken features are seeing attention. Among them is enabling native notification support for the Twitter, Facebook and Gmail ‘apps’ available from the Click App Store.

Ubuntu MATE is making progress as becoming an official Ubuntu derivative using the GNOME2-forked desktop environment.

Ubuntu MATE is reaching its first beta stage as being an official flavor of Ubuntu Linux. The Ubuntu MATE team has been working with the Ubuntu Technical Board to achieve an official status this cycle and the involved developers are currently working on new artwork and other MATE-themed integration.

There is currently an Ubuntu MATE Beta 1 release planned for 28 August as part of the Ubuntu 14.10 development cycle. Those wishing to learn more about the Ubuntu MATE work can find out more via the Ubuntu MATE blog.

Caveats and caution
First up: if you use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in any sort of situation requiring a rock solid and stable experience — say, controlling the air conditioning of a cat sanctuary or running a sisal toy company — then close this tab and stick with what you’ve got.

Secondly, installing the MATE 1.8.1 desktop on Ubuntu will pull in a bit more than just the basics. It features a few extra third-party applications, including Pidgin and HexChat, plus forked versions of Nautilus, image viewer, text editor, etc. If you plan on using it alongside Unity, KDE or Cinnamon then prepare for this “muddying” of your Dash/app menu.

The MATE desktop also uses its own network applet (so if you see two in the system tray, this is why), plymouth and desktop themes; doesn’t use the standard ‘indicator applets’ for messaging, volume, etc.; and, naturally, there’s no global menu applet support, either.

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, has joined the Khronos Group to help push open, cross-platform, industry-standard APIs.

While there apparently was no large announcement and it looks like they've been a member dating back to earlier this year, Canonical is a member of the Khronos Group and they can be found on the contributor member page.

Canonical's specific involvement with the Khronos Group isn't listed and we haven't seen Canonical names closely associated with any major specs out of the different working groups to date. However, Oliver Ries, the Head of Engineering Product Strategy at Canonical, wrote into Phoronix that they joined the group for pushing their display server agenda with trying to work towards an underlying driver standard for Mir/Wayland. Oli noted in his email, "Canonical has joined Khronos in order to help establish the necessary driver standard that is required for Mir (and Wayland) to succeed. We have specifically contributed to the current standard proposal/draft."

It's great to see Canonical getting involved with Khronos and hopefully we'll see more out of them with Khronos' OpenGL-Next and ideally increasing their contributions to Mesa/Linux-graphics driver development.
