Last year saw the well known web host and domain name registrar Dreamhost move 20,000 of its systems away from Debian 7 and onto Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for similar ‘support’ reasons.

Update na vijest u vezi Spotifyja. Za ovo nisam znao, ali pokazuje da je produženje podrške sa 3 na 5 g za LTS bio odličan potez za Canonical. Vjerovatno je i ključna stvar što Canonical može pružiti i tehničku podršku za svoj proizvod, dok afaik ne postoji plaćena podrška za Debian od strane Debiana.

he first point release of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS has been made available for download.

Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS rolls the majority of bug fixes, packages, and security updates that have been issued to the OS since its release back in April into one new, easily deployable image.

This means that those installing from the image do not have to download and install hundreds of additional updates straight after installation. Point releases also feature new and improved support for selected hardware. This helps to ensure that the OS remains as robust and compatible throughout its lifecycle as possible.

HERE, a Nokia company and global leader in mapping and location intelligence, has been selected as a key provider of location positioning services on Ubuntu mobile devices.

HERE will provide a hybrid solution integrating an A-GPS and WiFi positioning system. Although Ubuntu already features GPS-based location, GPS on its own is not sufficient to support the location services that run on the OS with a rapid and efficient location positioning capability. This fully integrated solution will also be available to the many thousands of application developers currently using Ubuntu OS on their own hardware.

The system has been designed to anonymously collect data on WiFi signal strength and local radio cells and pass this data back to a remote crowd-sourced location service. This is purely to improve the overall quality of the positioning service and is in line with Ubuntu’s policy on its use of personal data and an opt-out option will be available to all users.

Čitam na netu da taj dio nije prodan Microsoftu, iako će Microsoft kupiti četverogodišnju licencu ili tako nešto.

Tko bi rekao da već nije pod njima jer vidim da se koristi kao engine za bing mape, između ostalog.

Netko je linkao ugovor da nije prodano Microsoftu ali koriste i oni te usluge, ali tko zna. Ovisi i Skype za Linux o Microsoftu pa ga ipak razvijaju tako da sve i da je to Microsoftovo, ili da oni to kupe, to ne utječe na pružanje usluge bilo kome tko plati.

Ovo me bome iznenadilo, al mi je definitivno draže ovakvo rješenje nego da koriste Google.

Što se tiče Microsofta, oni su samo jedan od korisnika ovog location servisa, isto kao što će biti i Canonical i još tko zna koliko drugih firmi.
