GNOME Software is finally accepting reviews and votes for applications, and the work has been done with the help of an Ubuntu developer, Robert Ancell.

GNOME Software is finally getting this feature, which has been requested over and over by the community. The software center for the GNOME stack has been around for some time, but it lacked in certain areas. The introduction of comments and votes is a really big step forward.

You might want to know why an Ubuntu developer is mixed up with this particular feature, and the answer is quite simple. Canonical announced that it intends to replace Ubuntu Software Center with GNOME Software, but it can't do that unless it can provide the same type of features, including votes and comments.

In fact, the Ubuntu developers promised that the current comments and ratings from Ubuntu Software Center will be moved to the new application, but that will take some doing.

No login necessary for now
The developers haven't implemented any kind of restrictions, and the comments and ratings will be anonymous, but that might change if people abuse the feature.

"With a huge amount of help from Robert Ancell for a lot of the foundations for the new code, I’ve pushed a plugin today to allow anonymous rating of applications. If people abuse or spam this I’ll take the feature away until we can have OpenID logins in GNOME Online Accounts, but I’m kind of hoping people won’t be evil," GNOME developer Richard Hughes explained.

The Ubuntu team is probably involved to smoothen up the transition to the new software center, and they are likely going to push a lot more changes upstream once they adopt the new application.
Gnome Software Center sada prihvaća ocjenjivanje i komentiranje aplikacija zahvaljujući radu Ubuntuovog developera Roberta Ancella, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS će potencijalno dobiti Gnome Software Center umjesto Ubuntu Software Centera. Pretpostavljam da će Gnome Software Center biti i buduća baza za Ubuntu Store.

“It's officially out. Full support in the Mir display server will be landing in time for inclusion in Ubuntu 16.04,” wrote today on Google+ Stephen M. Webb, who is a software engineer working for Canonical.

This isn’t exactly a surprise since Canonical is also in talks with Nvidia, Intel, and AMD. They need these companies to provide driver support for the new Mir display server, and since these hardware makers are trying to make Vulkan happen, it only natural for Canonical to do the same.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) is expected to arrive on April 21. It will most likely have two versions, one with X server and Unity 7, and one with Mir and Unity 8.

Canonical today announced that it has joined the SAMSUNG ARTIK™ IoT ecosystem to enable faster development and deployment of IoT applications and services. Canonical is publishing a developer image of ‘snappy’ Ubuntu Core optimized for the SAMSUNG ARTIK 5 and 10 modules, which will be made available on developer.ubuntu.com in the next several weeks.

With a tiered architecture built for performance, optimized power consumption, memory utilization and footprint, SAMSUNG ARTIK modules are designed for a variety of applications – from wearables and end-nodes to powerful hubs with integrated wireless capabilities, local processing and analytics. The ‘best-in-class’ security solution starts with a hardware Secure Element (SE), and adds software Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Developers can benefit from the various wireless connectivity options (Zigbee, BLE, Wi-Fi) to securely connect various sensors around the house to the cloud and rely on Ubuntu Core’s capabilities to manage the security of devices once deployed by remotely and reliably upgrading the software running on these devices.

SAMSUNG ARTIK™ Platform and Canonical at Mobile World Congress 2016

Canonical is joining Samsung’s half-day developer training on the 23rd of February, and both companies will host a reception in the afternoon at the Canonical booth Hall 3 – 3J30. The SAMSUNG ARTIK platform will be demonstrated at the Canonical booth during the show, featuring Sensory’s TrulyHandsfree™ Voice Control technology running on Snappy.
Canonical i Samsung će donijeti Snappy Ubuntu Core na Samsungovim Artik 5 i 10 IoT developer modulima. Više detalja na linku.

We at Canonical have conducted a legal review, including discussion with the industry’s leading software freedom legal counsel, of the licenses that apply to the Linux kernel and to ZFS.

And in doing so, we have concluded that we are acting within the rights granted and in compliance with their terms of both of those licenses.

While the CDDL and GPLv2 are both “copyleft” licenses, they have different scope. The CDDL applies to all files under the CDDL, while the GPLv2 applies to derivative works.

The CDDL cannot apply to the Linux kernel because zfs.ko is a self-contained file system module — the kernel itself is quite obviously not a derivative work of this new file system.

And zfs.ko, as a self-contained file system module, is clearly not a derivative work of the Linux kernel but rather quite obviously a derivative work of OpenZFS and OpenSolaris. Equivalent exceptions have existed for many years, for various other stand alone, self-contained, non-GPL and even proprietary (hi, nvidia.ko) kernel modules.

Our conclusion is good for Ubuntu users, good for Linux, and good for all of free and open source software.

The Mobile World Congress 2016 is one of the biggest events of the year, so Canonical couldn't miss the opportunity of promoting its products, especially the mobile devices and the Ubuntu operating system.

The demos will cover pretty much everything that's done by Canonical, including OpenStack, LXD, Ubuntu Core on switches, cloud benchmarking, robots and drones, home gateways, industrial IOT, and much more.

We have it on good authority that Canonical will have some really interesting announcements this year that will likely be quite a surprise for the community. The phones and Ubuntu Touch will also be a major focus for the company, and Canonical is expected to demo the newly announced Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition convergent tablet.
Ovo je zanimljivo. Navodno nema veze sa desktopom, mobitelima i tabletima.

Ubuntu watch?

Earlier today, Telefonica announced the creation of the Open Source MANO (OSM) group and I am delighted to say that Canonical is one of the eight founding members of this community. A total of 23 Service Providers and Solution Vendors will work together to focus on delivering an open source Management and Orchestration (MANO) stack aligned with ETSI NFV Information Models.

OSM has been created under the umbrella of ETSI. It is an operator-led community to meet the requirements of production NFV networks such as a common Information Model (IM) that has been defined, implemented and released in open source software. Its main objective is to deliver a production-quality open source MANO stack.

Canonical’s Juju, the open source generic VNF manager, provides generic application modelling enabling OSM Orchestration and VIM layers to focus on industry-specific orchestration challenges, and is central to the delivery of the OSM project stack. Juju enables the industry to collaborate and crowd-source expertise in performance, security and integration.
