May 2015, London: Canonical is pleased to announce that HP is launching a number of devices, preloaded with Ubuntu, in Russia. The devices, including notebooks and All-In-One PCs, will be available for purchase from selected resellers and distributors throughout the region by mid-May, 2015.

LXD is the container-based hypervisor lead by Canonical. Today, Canonical published benchmarks showing that LXD runs guest machines 14.5 times more densely and with 57% less latency than KVM.

The container-based LXD is a dramatic improvement on traditional virtualisation and particularly valuable for large hosting environments. Web applications, for example, can be hosted on a fraction of the hardware using LXD than KVM resulting in substantial long term savings for large organisations.

Latency-sensitive workloads like voice or video transcode showed 57% less latency under LXD than KVM, making LXD an important new tool in the move to network function virtualisation in telecommunications and media, and the convergence of cloud and high performance computing.

Mark Shuttleworth is reportedly considering a move to make Canonical a public company.

Canonical is going on eleven years as the organization behind Ubuntu Linux but is yet to be profitable. The 500+ person company continues to be financed by Mark Shuttleworth's fortunes, but reportedly he's thinking about an initial public offering (IPO) to take the firm public on a yet-to-be-decided exchange (I'd assume between New York or London).

According to ZDNet, Mark expressed his possible plans this week at the OpenStack Summit in Vancouver. The idea has been tossed around internally for a few months but more discussions are still to be had on the matter.

Besides raising money to finish off the Ubuntu Phone/Touch vision and other consumer plans, Canonical as a public company could be an interesting story for investors on the front where they are making money and inroads against competitors like SUSE and Red Hat -- Ubuntu on servers and in the cloud, OpenStack included.

ntel and Canonical are collaborating around Intel® IOT Gateways and Snappy Ubuntu Core. The Intel® IOT Gateway will come with support for Snap Stores. The Snap Store supports a model where a range of applications will be deployed to a gateway. In this model, the gateway becomes a platform for multi applications (home, health, media, security, lighting, energy management, industrial, etc).

As more and more Snaps are downloaded onto a gateway, the need for performance increases. With a product lineup from Intel® QuarkTM to Intel® CoreTM Processor, The Intel® IOT Gateway is well positioned to scale up as applications grow in number.

Multi-application platforms increase the need for security on the gateway. Canonical and Intel have worked together to enable Ubuntu for capabilities like hardware enhanced encryption acceleration, and will work together to enable similar capabilities on Snappy Ubuntu Core.

Canonical is pleased that Cisco, developer of the Application Centric Infrastructure is joining the Ubuntu Cloud OpenStack Interoperability Lab (OIL). Cisco implements application policy as part of OpenStack Group Based Policy (GBP) and the Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) – delivering application policies to improve performance and simplify management of private clouds.

As the OpenStack ecosystem continues to grow rapidly, so does our OpenStack Interoperability Lab. In OIL, Canonical conducts interoperability testing on 3,000 plus cloud configurations each month, now with Cisco ACI along with 32 other OIL partners on Ubuntu OpenStack. OIL delivers customers the confidence that components of an OpenStack cloud work together – making it easier to deploy and consume cloud resources. OIL will provide Juju charms for Cisco ACI APIC and GBP, making it extremely easy to deploy application policy in OpenStack.

GBP and Cisco ACI APIC will be incorporated into OIL and tested with Ubuntu OpenStack making it easier for Canonical customers to deploy and use, along with solutions from over 25 other partner hardware and software providers.

Among the new features implemented in Unity8, we can mention support for comments, retweets, and posts in Scopes, improved visibility, new downloading animation and wiggling on notification to the launcher, shell rotation, improved AP helpers, as well as various enhancements to the greeter.

Furthermore, multiple improvements have arrived in the switcher component, which will be integrated into the Ubuntu Desktop, a lot of effort has been invested in the new Ubuntu shape in Scope cards, as well as the new icon shapes, and some intensive performance analysis work has been done for the entire project.

The Mir display server has received a lot of improvements as well. For example, there are many buffer semantic changes that promise to help nested bypass, a lot of work has been done for exposing multibuffer streams out to the client, and various improvements landed in the server to client area.

Additionally, touch screen detection has been implemented, the mirevent2.0 component has gotten cleaned up, the touch validator has been improved, Mir-on-X (MirX) has received several enhancements and is almost ready for production, and menu support is on its way, along with many other attractive new features.

Michael Zanetti has had the great pleasure of informing us earlier about the latest features that have been implemented in the Ubuntu's Unity 8 user interface for Desktop and Ubuntu Touch.

Therefore, we can report that Unity 8 has finally received full shell rotation, which landed in the devel version of Ubuntu Touch earlier this week, great enhancements to the inline scope media playback with many contributions from the Media Hub community.

A lot of work has been done to align the features of the Unity Launcher from Unity 7 with Unity 8, and the highly anticipated wiggling alert notification has been finished and it will most probably land in the next days.

"After we've been halting our landing queue for a bit in order to keep the road clear for shell rotation, we've started to work through the queue of approved branches. It contains a variety of bug fixes and test improvements," says Michael Zanetti.

New Alt+tab implementation and Desktop session management coming soon

In addition to the changes mentioned above, it is very important to notice here that the all-new Alt+tab implementation will land soon in the latest Unity 8 code, but it must receive some more interesting features to be released in the wild.

The Unity 8 team has informed us that they are working hard on implementing new features in the Alt+tab functionality, which is getting merged into the Unity 8 code as we speak. They will need a lot of feedback once it's out.

Last but not least, a lot of effort has been put into the session management, which should arrive on the Desktop edition of Ubuntu quite soon, and support has been added for apps to exit gracefully instead of being killed.
