Canonical is making good on its promises, and it has started to disable the online search functionality in Unity's dash, for Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus).

Disabling online searches is not that simple since it involves more than just the operating system. The searches were redirected through Canonical's servers, which stripped them of any identifiers, so infrastructure will also need to be changed.

"Just finished disabling remote search by default in #ubuntu xenial, demoting some of our default scopes to universe and removing the music online store packages. The remaining part is to be done by the online service team (disabling of some online scopes by default) which should happen shortly!" Ubuntu developer Didier Roche said on Google+.

The announcement was made just a few days ago by the Canonical's Will Cooke, Unity desktop lead. It didn't take long for the first changes to be implemented. The Audacious, Clementine, gmusicbrowser, Gourmet, Guayadeque, and Musique scopes are also getting removed. Moreover, the Music Store is being removed for 16.04 LTS onwards.

We've just been informed by Martin Wimpress, the main developer and leader of Ubuntu MATE, about the general availability of a spin-off project from Ubuntu MATE, called Ubuntu Pi Flavour Maker.

As its name might suggest, Ubuntu Pi Flavour Maker is an open source tool, a shell script that lets anyone port any of the official or unofficial Ubuntu Linux flavors for the Raspberry Pi 2 single-board computer (SBC).

Ubuntu Pi Flavour Maker is officially supported on the Ubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu and Ubuntu GNOME flavors, and uses the traditional apt and dpkg package management systems from Debian GNU/Linux.

The script is not compatible with the first-generation Raspberry Pi devices, it is not based on the next-gen Ubuntu Snappy technologies, and it does not support distribution release upgrades.

"Ubuntu Pi Flavour Maker is a spin-off from the Raspberry Pi 2 initiative for Ubuntu MATE The basic idea is simple; make as many Ubuntu flavours for the Raspberry Pi 2 we can. Ubuntu Pi Flavour Maker is few shell scripts and a PPA," said Mr. Wimpress.

According to a recent submission published by Marco Trevisan a few minutes ago on the Launchpad repository of the Unity 7 project, it would appear that we might be able to rotate the Unity interface and place it at the bottom of the screen.

Marco Trevisan is one of the developers working for the Ubuntu Kylin flavor of Ubuntu Linux. He started to develop the new UnityShell-Rotated-Kylin functionality back in mid-September, but today, December 22, 2015, he has finally managed to propose his branch for merging into Ubuntu.

"From a high level prospective, I can say that launcher works quite well (nice work!). I've not checked all the internals, but I like most of things I see. The Hud should always show the embedded icon in this case, the changes are included in lp:~3v1n0/unity/rotated-improvements," says Marco Trevisan.
