A user with a Windows username that Samba does not recognise will not need to provide credentials to access the share, and they will be authenticated as the guest user. Any files they write there will have their user and group ID set to 'nobody'. However, if the username is known to Samba, then the user will be prompted for their password. This might seem weird, but it is consistent with the way Windows works.
security = user
map to guest = Bad Password
From smb.conf man page: "(map to guest) Bad User - Means user logins with an invalid password are rejected, unless the username does not exist, in which case it is treated as a guest login and mapped into the guest account." Combined with a "guest ok = yes" directive under a share will enable user/password-less browsing
The issue happens because Microsoft decided to “help” you to be more secure, by disabled guest access to remote file access without an account (i.e. user name and password).
