Samba 4 threatens Microsoft's enterprise lock-in

When Microsoft was charged with antitrust violations by a European court in 2004, they agreed to make all the information for network authentication with Active Directory available on fair terms. With substantial effort, the open source Samba project was able to negotiate terms that resulted in documentation becoming available to the project.

mislio sam da je nesto takvoga, sumnjam da bi se microsoft dobrovoljno odrekao prednosti koju je imao sa ad-om, bez obzira sto je veci broj korisnika ionak koristio samo dio njegovih mogucnosti koje bi mogli dobiti i na nekoj open platformi.

Samba4 je na razini AD 2003, barem bila prije nekog vremena (moram to isprobati). Samo da se Cro trziste otarasi fol "integratora" koji forsaju MS solucije kao bogom dane.

The availability of Samba 4 will do Microsoft's server business some harm but will do more good for Windows over the long run.

Microsoft went far beyond just releasing the protocols and has been helping the Samba team throughout the process -- though slow and laborious as it was.

Microsoft even offered up a few words of compliment to the Samba team with the release of version 4 this week. That doesn't suggest to me that Samba is going to put Microsoft out of business any time soon.

"Active Directory is a mainstay of enterprise IT environments, and Microsoft is committed to support for interoperability across platforms," said Thomas Pfenning, director of development, Windows Server. "We are pleased that the documentation and interoperability labs that Microsoft has provided have been key in the development of the Samba 4.0 Active Directory functionality."

za domenu na serveru bi uvijek birao win std edition, za ostale servere linux.
za klijente ovisi što kome treba.

6000 kn za win server std edition je sitnica za jednu firmu sa 20+ desktop računala.
200 kn po cal-u je sitnica i sve imaš tip/top.
romming profil + openldap na linuxu integriran u ad.

za manje od 20 desktop računala imaš esential, mislim da je do 15 ili 20 desktop računala.

fedora 18 će imati potpuno integrirano spajanje u ad.

od verzije 19 će biti rolling release.
